You can certainly get a good deal if you know what to look out for.
Conformity with your vehicle:
Make sure that the make and profile of both tyres match. Make sure that the load and speed indices are equal to or higher than those recommended by your car manufacturer. If so, you can proceed to check the treadwear.
Treadwear:
Start by checking the treadwear. The main groove of a new tyre is between 8 and 9mm deep. The treadwear indicator is located at 1.6mm. Measuring the depth of the main groove will give you a good indication of your tyre's treadwear.
TIP: use a 20p coin to do the test. If you can see any part of the outer band of the coin face, your tyres are too worn. Otherwise, you know that there is still at least 4mm depth...
Evenness of treadwear:
Under-inflation causes premature wear of the tread's edges.
Over-inflation causes premature wear of the tread itself.
The right pressure will ensure even treadwear.
Misalignment or geometry problems can also affect the evenness of treadwear. You shouldn't buy second-hand tyres if the treadwear seems unusual to you. Check the examples below:
