When should snow tyres be used in Germany?

Snow tyres have been mandatory in Germany when driving in winter conditions: snow, slush, frost, or ice on the roads since 4th December 2010.

The following tyre types are permitted by German law in winter conditions:

3PMSF- (Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake) approved winter tyres.
Tyres with the M+S (Mud + Snow) marking are allowed until 30th September 2024 and provided they were manufactured before 1^st January 2018. You can check this on your tyre's DOT label.

What are the risks of driving without winter tyres in Germany in winter conditions?

Your insurer may refuse to compensate you in the event of an accident.
You risk a fine of €60 in the event of an inspection.
If you disrupt traffic, the fine is €80.
European drivers may lose a point from their licence.

Don't take any risks, gear up with winter tyres.
