How to choose between an SUV tyre and a 4x4 tyre?
Although the terms are often conflated, the choice depends on your vehicle’s design and where you drive:
- The SUV tyre (Crossover): Intended for vehicles that mostly drive on tarmac. It prioritises acoustic comfort, low rolling resistance (to improve fuel efficiency) and safety on wet roads.
- The 4x4 tyre (Off-roader): Designed for vehicles with all-wheel drive that are intended for off-road driving. These tyres are heavier and noisier, but provide exceptional resistance to cuts and impacts on rocks or in ruts.

Safety criteria: Load indices and winter markings
As 4x4s and SUVs are particularly heavy, they often require tyres with specific load indices, frequently identified by the marking XL (Extra Load). This means the tyre can withstand higher pressure and load.
Never fit a lower index than that recommended by the manufacturer. Under weight and pressure, the tyre could overheat or even burst.
For journeys in mountainous areas or on snowy roads, always opt for the 3PMSF marking (depicted by a three-peak mountain surrounding a snowflake). This logo now features on all winter tyres and the vast majority of latest-generation all-season tyres.
The 3PMSF designation certifies that the tyre has successfully passed official traction and braking tests in winter conditions.
Fitting your 4x4 tyres: what you need to know
As experts, we draw your attention to a golden rule specific to permanent all-wheel-drive systems:
On vehicles with all-wheel drive (4WD), we strongly recommend replacing all four tyres at the same time. Uneven wear between the front and rear axles can cause costly mechanical damage to your drivetrain (differential, transfer case, etc…).
