How do I change a flat tyre?

With safety in mind, pull over and use a hazard triangle to warn other drivers of your presence.

  • Apply your hand brake.
  • Put your car into gear to lock the wheels.
  • Loosen the nuts with your wrench without unscrewing them completely.
  • Set up the jack to lift your car.
  • Unscrew the nuts.
  • Remove the wheel. If you can't get it off, you can hit it with your spare. It often takes a few blows to remove a wheel that's stuck.
  • Don't be scared.
  • Put your spare tyre in place.
  • Re-tighten the nuts.
  • Bring the vehicle back down to the ground.
  • Tighten all your nuts one last time.

What is the speed limit with a spare tyre?

You must not exceed 50mph with your spare tyre.
