How do I read the size of a tyre?

This is always to be interpreted in the same way and is broken down as follows:
(Width)/(profile or 'aspect ratio') R (rim) (load index) (speed symbol).
This gives, in our example: 225/55 R17 97W.

Go further:

225: the width is expressed in mm;
55: this is the ratio between the sidewall height and the width;
17: the inner diameter of the tyre is expressed in inches and is equal to the rim;
97: the load index indicates the maximum weight supported per tyre (see table below).
W: the speed index ranges from A to Y, and each letter corresponds to an equivalence indicating the maximum possible speed (see below).
